RAD BIOMED’S DISCOVER MEDICAL DEVICES COMMENCES CLINICAL TRIAL OF SLEEP APNEA MASK

Tel – Aviv, Israel, March 21st, 2011 – RAD BioMed, a leading success-accelerator for Israeli life science startups, today announced that its portfolio company, Discover Medical Devices, has started a second clinical trial for its Somnuseal™ mask for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Non compliance is the major issue in therapy for OSA patients. Approximately 20 million patients in the United States are diagnosed with OSA and require Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) treatment. Due to comfort issues related to the currently available CPAP masks, only 35% of the patients are compliant.
Discover Medical Devices developed the Somnuseal ™ CPAP mask to address the need of non-compliant OSA patients. In its first clinical trial completed in March 2010, the SomnuSeal ™ mask demonstrated that it successfully addresses part of the OSA CPAP non-compliance problem. Sixty percent of the non-compliant OSA patients in the study succeeded to sleep comfortably, with some patients raising issues about mask size.
In order to increase compliance among a larger non-compliant patient population , Discover Medical started and concluded development of a smaller size SomnuSeal™ mask. In the current clinical trial, patients will have a choice of two sizes, thus potentially raising the percentage of compliant OSA patients to much higher levels.
